Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital (MNTRH) is Kenya’s leading mental health care facility (level 6). With 700 inpatient beds, we offer comprehensive mental health care, outpatient services, and rehabilitation. Our specialized services include psychiatric care, forensic psychiatry, and child and adolescent mental health care. MNTRH also engages in community outreach to raise mental health awareness and education.

In addition to our clinical services, we are committed to training the next generation of mental health professionals and advancing research in mental health and neuroscience.

Establishment

Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital (MNTRH) traces its origins to 1904 when it was initially built as a Smallpox Isolation Center, in 1910 it was founded as a Lunatic Asylum and in 1924, it was renamed Mathari Mental Hospital. The institution was officially designated as Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital in December 2013. On August 21, 2020, it gained the status of a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency (SAGA).
